What is Planetary Health?

What is Planetary Health?

The concept of Planetary Health was addressed by The Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission on Planetary Health in 2015 (Whitemee et al., Lancet 2015). They said, “Our definition of Planetary Health is the achievement of the highest attainable standard of health, well-being, and equity worldwide through judicious attention to the human systems—political, economic, and social—that shape the future of humanity and the Earth’s natural systems that define the safe environmental limits within which humanity can flourish.”Over a decade, the Earth Systems have already exceeded their safe boundaries and distributive justice for them also exceeded their just boundaries in many aspects. Planetary health seeks to provide research, education, and action framework for establishing a sustainable relationship between humans and our planet in a world that is constantly changing, including climate change.

What is Planetary Health Alliance Japan HUB?

Led by members of The Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission on Planetary Health, the Planetary Health Alliance was launched in 2016 (headquartered at Johns Hopkins University in the United States) and has expanded to more than 400 universities, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and government agencies over the 60 countries, and they play a central role in the rapid growth of this diverse transdisciplinary field. In May 2023, the Planetary Health Alliance Japan Hub (regional office at Nagasaki University) was established. We are currently engaging in discussions about setting a framework for planetary health in Japan and other Asian regions. These regions have different boundaries between nature and human society than in Western countries. We welcome participation from people of all ages from various specialized fields, from students to seniors.
